Donald Trump, the 45th President of the United States, has been a subject of intense legal scrutiny throughout his business and political career. As of 2023, he has faced approximately 500 lawsuits, encompassing a wide range of allegations from fraud and breach of contract to sexual assault and campaign finance violations.

Business Practices

Many of the lawsuits against Trump stem from his business dealings. In the 1970s, the Department of Justice filed a lawsuit alleging that Trump Management Corporation, owned by Trump and his father, discriminated against African Americans by refusing to rent apartments to them. The case was settled out of court with an agreement to cease the discriminatory practices.

Another notable lawsuit was filed in 1992 by the New Jersey Attorney General, which accused Trump of defrauding customers at three of his casinos. Two of the women who accused Trump of sexual assault, Jessica Leeds and Rachel Crooks, filed defamation lawsuits against him after he publicly denied their allegations. The lawsuits were eventually dismissed.

Fraud

Trump has also been sued for fraud on multiple occasions. In 2018, the New York Attorney General filed a lawsuit alleging that Trump and his charitable foundation had engaged in illegal fundraising and self-dealing. The lawsuit resulted in Trump being ordered to pay $2 million in restitution and dissolve his foundation.

In 2020, the House of Representatives impeached Trump on charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress for pressuring Ukraine to investigate his political rival, Joe Biden. The Senate acquitted him on both charges.

Emoluments Clause

Trump has also been sued for violating the Emoluments Clause of the U.S. Constitution, which prohibits government officials from receiving gifts or payments from foreign governments. In 2017, the Center for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington filed a lawsuit alleging that Trump's business dealings with foreign governments violated the Emoluments Clause. The case is ongoing.
