Air Transport Command: The Birth of the United States Air Mobility Command
The Air Transport Command (ATC) was established on June 1, 1942, as a major command of the United States Army Air Forces. The ATC was responsible for providing airlift support for the United States military during World War II. The ATC played a critical role in the war effort, transporting troops, supplies, and equipment to the front lines.
The ATC was organized into four main divisions: the Atlantic Division, the Pacific Division, the Mediterranean Division, and the China-Burma-India Division. The Atlantic Division was responsible for airlift operations in the Atlantic Ocean and Europe. The Pacific Division was responsible for airlift operations in the Pacific Ocean and Asia. The Mediterranean Division was responsible for airlift operations in the Mediterranean Sea and North Africa. The China-Burma-India Division was responsible for airlift operations in the China-Burma-India theater.

The ATC operated a variety of aircraft, including the C-47 Skytrain, the C-54 Skymaster, and the C-87 Liberator Express. The ATC also operated a number of gliders, which were used to transport troops and supplies into combat zones.
The ATC played a critical role in the Allied victory in World War II. The ATC transported over 1 million troops, 2 million tons of supplies, and 10 million gallons of fuel to the front lines. The ATC also evacuated over 1 million civilians from war zones.
After the war, the ATC was disbanded on December 31, 1945. However, its legacy lived on in the creation of the United States Air Mobility Command (AMC) in 1961. The AMC is responsible for providing airlift support for the United States military today, and it is one of the most important components of the United States Air Force.
