Early Life and Education

Edvard Grieg was born on June 15, 1843, in Bergen, Norway. His father was a merchant and his mother was a pianist. Grieg began studying piano at the age of six, and he showed a remarkable talent for music. In 1858, he traveled to Leipzig, Germany, to study at the Leipzig Conservatory. He studied piano with Carl Reinecke and composition with Moritz Hauptmann.

Career

Grieg returned to Norway in 1862 and began his career as a composer and pianist. He quickly gained recognition for his talent, and he soon became one of the most popular composers in Norway. In 1867, he married Nina Hagerup, a Norwegian soprano. The couple had one daughter, Alexandra.
