Despite facing criticism from the official art establishment, Irina refused to compromise her artistic vision. "Art should be free to express the soul of the people," she says. "It should not be dictated by political dogma."
3. Mikhail, the Worker
Mikhail was a factory worker who experienced both the benefits and drawbacks of the Soviet industrial system. He benefited from guaranteed employment, social security, and the promise of a brighter future.
However, he also witnessed the inefficiencies and shortages that plagued the Soviet economy. "We worked hard, but we didn't always have the materials we needed," he says. "And sometimes, the pay was barely enough to make ends meet."
4. Anna, the Housewife
Anna was a housewife who struggled to navigate the challenges of daily life in the Soviet Union. She spent hours queuing for basic necessities such as milk, bread, and toilet paper.
Despite the hardships, Anna remained resilient. "We had to make do with what we had," she says. "We grew our own vegetables in a small garden plot, and we shared food with our neighbors."
5. Vladimir, the Scientist
Vladimir was a scientist who worked on the Soviet space program. He witnessed both the triumphs – such as the launch of Sputnik, the first artificial satellite in space – and the tragedies – such as the Soyuz 1 mission, which resulted in the death of cosmonaut Vladimir Komarov.
"We pushed the boundaries of human knowledge," he says. "But we also paid a high price for our ambition."
6. Svetlana, the Schoolgirl
Svetlana was a schoolgirl who grew up during the Brezhnev era. She attended school in a small town in Siberia, where the curriculum was heavily influenced by Soviet ideology.
"We were taught to love the Party and to work for the good of the collective," she says. "But we weren't encouraged to ask questions or to think critically."
7. Igor, the Soldier
Igor was a conscript who served in the Soviet military during the Brezhnev era. He was stationed in East Germany, where he witnessed the tensions of the Cold War first-hand.
"We were trained to be ready for anything," he says. "We believed that we were defending our homeland from the threat of Western imperialism."
8. Nina, the Pensioner
Nina was a pensioner who lived in a small apartment in Moscow. She had worked as a teacher for most of her life, and she enjoyed a modest pension.
"I'm grateful for the security that my pension provides," she says. "But I do worry about the future. The cost of living is rising, and I'm not sure how I'll make ends meet."
